Our project was realized in the capital city of The Democratic Republic of Congo in Kinshasa in the institutions established and maintained by the Foundation - College Othniel and La Providence orphanage – and in their immediate surrounding. The colleagues of College Othniel, the staff of the orphanage and the engineer of the local water supplier REGIDESCO participated in the work. The project was coordinated by Mr. András Domonyai who has been living in Africa since 2013 with short breaks, and he started researching in the field of cultivation of plants in Kenya.

What was the problem?

visibility project in congo
The lack of access of water and its waste. The broken pipes or illegally disconnected pipes did not only hinder the water supply for km long distances, but they were harmful for health too (for example because of the contamination of the pipes.)

 What we achieved?

replacement of water pipes

  • The outdated water pipes were replaced in the territory of our Hungarian supporting school and orphanage and nearby, thereby stabilizing pressure and maintaining water supply for the students, teachers, orphans and the inhabitants of the area; approximately 22.000 people.
  • The normal and stable water pressure and water access is being solved with a big capacity cistern in the orphanage. The appropriate storage of the water can be lifesaving in danger.
  • New water access points were created to help the inhabitants and workers of the region.
  • During the work information was given to the habitants about the water system, about its functioning and handling and the arising problems, first of all in the frame of training with informal and friendly conversations. We prepared detailed series of lectures about the worth of the water, living world, water cleanliness, -consumption and sewage for the elderly age group. We organized lectures about water cleanliness, hand wash, general questions about sanitation, waste of water, and water as worth for the youth generation.

The result is visible! Watch the video here!

  • the water supply is more stable in streets surrounding our school;
  • the water pressure increased significantly in the houses and households;
  • thanks to the more water access point, the water holding distance reduced;
  • the habitants of the district give more attention for the handling of the water pipes, and can realize any breakage or damage in the pipes;
  • the opportunities of regular grooming, washing and cooking with non-contaminated water was created.
