Poultry farm for La Providence orphanage

Foreword

One of the main long term goals of Foundation for Africa is to make the Othniel College and the La Providence Orphanage self-sustainable. This project would be the first small milestone on this long journey, making the orphanage less dependent on funds and creating an opportunity to make some profit on their own. A profit that can be ‘recycled’ into the orphanage’s low budget. A poultry farm is an easy to start, develop and sustain system, which is adding an extra protein source to the children’s menu in the first period and later on can provide a surplus of eggs that can be easily sold on the local markets.

Project description

Construction of a poultry farm with 20 layers, that can provide eggs as an additional protein source to the children’s daily menu and gives a responsibility to the orphans.

Progression of the project

At the moment the project is in preparation period, where fundraising and the search for supporters is taking place. There is ongoing negotiation with a local businessman, who provides the project with the layer birds. As a result of this negotiation, the construction had to start immediately, for which, the Foundation has credited the necessary starting budget. The task during the construction is going to be the erection of a fence around the marked area and the construction of a poultry shed, bearing the radical weather conditions in mind.

Goal

Establishing a system demanding daily routine, that is giving an opportunity to the kids to learn about farming and livestock. Later on with increasing the number of livestock, the main goal is to create an income generating activity: selling the surplus of the eggs.
